Zuowen Yu
BSc/MBChB, MSc, PhD
Dr Yu was born in a family with a well-known Traditional Chinese
Medicine background. His father, who has enormous experience
in healing various difficult problems, is a prestigious TCM doctor
and professor in China. Influenced by what he constantly saw
and heard, Dr Yu has had great interest in acupuncture and
Chinese herbal medicine since his childhood. Following in his
father's footsteps, his early education of traditional Chinese
culture such as Chinese Medicine, Tai Ji, Chinese calligraphy,
etc. started when he was only five years old.

In September 1985 when he was fifteen-year old, he became one of the youngest students
at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. During the next eight years, not only
he studied Chinese Medicine, including Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and
massage , but he also learned conventional medicine, covering physiology, pathology,
pharmacology, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases.

With a Bachelor degree attained in July 1993, he started practising in Haiser Hospital. In the
first three years, he gained plenty of knowledge by working in different sections such as
cardiovascular, digestive, endocrinological, respiratory, renal, gyneacological and surgery.

With particular interest in rheumatology and immunology, in July 1995, he went to the
hospital affiliated to Shandong University of TCM for one-year advance study. Then, in
September 1998, he studied for his Master of Science degree in Shandong University of
TCM where he continued his research on rheumatology and immunology.

Passing the Language Proficiency Test held by the Ministry of Public Health of China in May
1999, Dr Yu was awarded a Sasakawa Medical Scholarship. With the assistance of the
Nippon Foundation, this program is the outcome of a three part agreement between the
Chinese Ministry of Public Health, the Japan-China Medical Association and the Sasakawa
Memorial Health Foundation (SMHF).

Subsequently, he entered Nanjing University of TCM as a doctoral student in 2001
supervised by Professor Shi Jin, a famous expert in rheumatology and immunology. Later,
because of his excellent achievement, he won a scholarship from Hongkong Qiu Shi
Science and Technologies Foundation in 2003. This foundation aims to encourage
accomplished scholars and promote the development of science and technology in China.
Dr Yu received a PhD degree in July 2004.

Since 2004, Dr. Yu has been practising acupuncture  and Chinese herbal medicine in
several areas of the UK such as Manchester, Sale Cheshire, Sheffield, London and
Northern Ireland. As a qualified practitioner, he has a wealth of experience in treating diverse
health problems. In particular, he has expertise in
rheumatological, immunological,
gynaecological and digestive diseases
. His practice combines TCM with modern
approaches. Chinese herbal medicine can be prescribed either separately or in conjunction
with acupuncture treatment.

Apart from clinical practice, Dr Yu is also active in academic communication and volunteering
campaign. For instance, he volunteered to offer treatment to those suffered from medical
problems in rural area several times during his doctoral time. Also, in July 2002, Dr Yu, as a
representative of doctoral students, attended a seminar in China Medical University in
Taiwan, promoting the communication between TCM professionists of both sides.

So far, Dr Yu has published over a dozen research papers in medical journals, among
which "treating 35 cases of Bechet's disease with the integration of TCM and western
medicine" was awarded as a good thesis by QingDao Technology Association in 1999.
Besides that, he was the third major researcher of the research treating active ankylosing
spondylitis (AS) with the method of 'clearing heat resolving dampness removing
blood-stasis tonifying kidney', a program which won the third prize of Shandong Provincial
Technology Progress Reward in 1999.  Also, he co-edited the book Diagnosis and
Treatment of Rheumatic Diseases with the Integration of TCM and conventional Medicine in
2001.

Dr Yu is a fellow of the Rheumatology Association of CATCM and a member of the Chinese
Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion. Also, he is a fully insured practitioner member of
the Association of TCM, the largest professional regulatory body for TCM in the UK. He is
recognised as an acupuncture and TCM practitioner by
