Primary infertility refers that ladies, who live with their partners whose reproductive function are normal, fail to be pregnant without
contraception for over two years. While secondary infertility means women are unable to get pregnant over two years after previous
delivery or miscarriage, without contraception.

Deficiency of kidney yang

Main manifestations: infertility, delayed period which is scanty and light-coloured, lack of libido, cold sensation in the lower abdomen,
accompanied by gloomy complexion, soreness and weakness in the lower back and legs, loose stools, nocturia, pale tongue with white
coating, deep and thready pulse.
Primary infertility or maldevelopment of uterus is often found.

Therapeutic principle: Warming kidney and tonifying yang, regulating chong and ren.

Chinese herbal medicine: modified Yu Lin Zhu
Ren Shen, Bai zhu, Fu Ling, Bai Shao, Chuan Xiong, Shu Di, Dang Gui, Zhi Gan Cao, Tu Si Zi, Du Zhong, Chuan Jiao, Dan Shen, Xiang Fu.

Stagnation of liver-qi

Main manifestations: infertility, irregular period, scanty menstrual blood with dark colour, abdominal pain before period, breast
distention before period, irritability, pink tongue with white thin coating, taut pulse.

Therapeutic principle: Soothing the liver to regulate the circulation of qi.

Chinese herbal medicine: modified Xiao Yao San or Yue Jue Wan

Phlegm-dampness

Main manifestations: infertility, obesity, delayed menstrual cycle, or even amenorrhea, excessive and sticky vaginal discharge,
accompanied by pale complexion, dizziness, palpitation, chest fullness, nausea, white and greasy tongue coating, slippery pulse.
Endocrine dysfunctional obesity is usually found.

Therapeutic principle: Eliminating dampness and resolving phlegm.

Dampness-heat

Main manifestations: infertility, profuse vaginal discharge, either white or yellow, sticky, sometimes with foul smell, lower abdominal
pain on occasion, or irregular period, greasy tongue coating, especially the root part, thready soften or taut pulse.
Pelvic inflammation with or without obstruction of fallopian tube often exists.

Therapeutic principle: Clearing away dampness and heat, regulating qi and blood.

Blood-stasis

Main manifestations: delayed period, dark colour, with clots or dysmenorrheal, purplish tongue with ecchymosis, thready and taut
pulse.
Endometriosis or hysteromyoma belongs to this category.

Therapeutic principle: Promoting blood circulation, expelling stasis, regulating qi and blood.
