Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also known as spastic colon, is a functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain and
changes in bowel habits which are not associated with any apparent structural abnormalities. The abdominal pain can be
described as either diarrhea-predominant or constipation-predominant. IBS can occur at any age, but it often begins in
adolescence or early adulthood. And it is more common in women.

According to our experience, there are three major differentiation categories in clinic:

Invasion of the spleen by liver qi

This type is often induced by emotional stress. The function of the liver is to ensure the smooth circulation of qi around the body
and by doing this it aids all the other organs in their functions. When the liver is out of balance then it can upset other organs.
Emotional strain impairs the liver’s ability to promote the flow of qi and causes liver qi to invade the spleen. It is the disharmony
between these two that explains that alternation between constipation and diarrhea.

Deficiency of kidney and spleen yang

A deficiency of renal yang may be the result of prolonged illness or of a weak constitution in an elderly patient. Kidney yang helps
the spleen, stomach and intestines digest food and absorb the essence of food because fire usually promotes earth. When
deficient kidney yang fails to warm the spleen and stomach, diarrhea following abdominal pain and borborygmus happens at
dawn.
