IVF and Acupuncture
photo

A growth has been noticed in demand of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of infertility and assist of IVF. Undoubtedly, part of it is due to burgeoning media attention; however, it is mostly contributed to the effectiveness of treatment itself.

Whether you want to conceive naturally, or if IVF is necessary, acupuncture can significantly increase your fertility by stimulating your body's natural ability to heal itself. Personally, I find the joy from delivering successful fertility-related treatment very rewarding.

When it comes to acupuncture in conjunction with IVF, ideally women and their partners wanting to improve their sperm health should start seeing a practitioner at least three months before IVF begins. The assistant of acupuncture involves a combination of enhanced function of the reproductive system with increased relaxation and relief from emotional disturbance during the procedure.

There is a saying in China: cultivate the soil before planting the seed. Therefore, I attach great important to the treatment prior to IVF. While infertility may appear to be the core problem, it is actually the manifestation of a deeper underlying imbalance. In our clinic, I found that a majority if clients considering IVF actually have certain kind of underlying problems suck as endometriosis, polycystic syndrome, hysteromyoma, etc. To those clients, I strong recommend that their underlying problems should be treated first by either acupuncture, Chinese herbs or both. Only upon a strong foundation can a successful conception achieve. Our endeavour is to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy.

Abnormal Position and Presentation of the Fetus Treated With Moxibustion
photo

Position refers to whether the fetus is facing rearward (toward the woman's back, or face down) or forward (face up). Presentation refers to the part of the fetus's body that leads the way out through the birth canal.

When the baby grows in the womb it stays in the upright position for most of the time. Toward the end of pregnancy, the fetus moves into position for delivery. Normally, the position of a fetus is facing rearward (toward the woman's back) with the face and body angled to one side and the neck flexed, and presentation is head first. An abnormal position is facing forward, and abnormal presentations include face, brow, breech, and shoulder etc.

With Chinese medicine, acupuncture in particular, abnormal position and presentation of fetus can be treated easily. Let the pregnant lady lie in supine position with her knees bent and her girdle loosened. Apply an ignited moxa stick over acupoint Zhiyin (BL67) on both feet, 15 minutes each, once or twice a day. A course consists of 7 days. The treatment should end at the time of rectification. However, the results in our clinic sometimes are rather amazing. The fetus turns upside down even 2-5 days. It depends on the woman’s general condition and her emotional state.

In Chinese medicine, BL 67 is the point to turn the fetus. Because this point locates where the Bladder meridian and Kidney meridian connect, it can regulate the Kidney and tonify Qi.

Apart from above-mentioned moxa treatment, we suggest the would-be mum do bit of homework at home by herself. After micturition, loose her dresses and belts first, then kneel down on the bed, lower her chest to the level of bed and raise her buttock in a high position. This physical posture should be kept for 10-15 minutes each time, twice a day.
