In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system, we can find yin-yang theory everywhere. It has been used to explain organic structure,
physiological function and pathological changes of our body. It guides diagnosis and treatment in practice. Just as Su Wen (Basic
Questions) says, "yin and yang are the law of heaven and earth, the outline of everything, the parents of all changes, the origin of
birth and destruction above, and the source of all mysteries."
As the unity of opposites, yin and yang constitute the fundamental law of the universe; the growth, development and evolution of
everything in the world result from the unification of these opposites. It also explains the change of women's menstrual cycle. There
are 4 phases included in this the period, i.e. period, follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase. Mutual transformation of yin and yang
can be found in each phase.
In clinic, infertile women are likely to have irregular menstruation, which can be caused by various factors. Some may have abnormal
FSH/LH, which indicates pituitary dysfunction; some may have higher prolactin, which affects ovulation; some may have polycystic
ovary; others may have endometriosis. Different symptoms can be seen in clinic, such as delayed period, menorrhagia, anovular
menstruation, etc. Normally Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are administrated to restore yin-yang balance and regulate
period, thus promoting pregnancy.
Application of Yin Yang in Regulating Menstruation
The method of regulating menstruation is based on yin yang theory, combing the change of menstrual cycle and the change of
estrogen (yin) and progesterone (yang).
Regulating menstruation and assisting pregnancy
Regulating menstruation is a good support to in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Chinese herbs and acupuncture are often be used to regulate
menstruation and restore yin (estrogen) -yang (progesterone) balance.
In Germany, scientists have found that acupuncture can increase success rates by almost 50% in women having IVF, and the pregnancy
rate in the group receiving acupuncture was 42.5%, compared to the group which didn't receive the therapy, where the rate was
26.3%.
In the States, Researchers from Weill Medical College of Cornell University, NY shows that taking acupuncture during IVF can reduce
stress hormones that interfere with ovulation; normalize hormones that regulate ovulation so an egg is released, increase blood flow to
the uterus and thus improve the chances of embryo implantation.
Regulating menstruation and other gynaecological conditions
Regulating menstruation can be applied to some conditions like polycystic ovary, endometriosis, PMS, etc.
Take polycystic ovary syndrome (POS) as an example. POS is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age,
and is a leading cause of infertility. It is characterized by weight problems, lack of regular ovulation and/or menstruation, and
excessive amounts or effects of androgenic hormones. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly among women. It is
also strongly related to insulin resistance, diabetes, and obesity. With regulating menstruation as a therapeutic principle, Chinese
herbal medicine and acupuncture have achieved good result without obvious side-effects.
